Conveniently located in central Reykjavik and established in 1896, Landakotsskóli is Iceland´s oldest and longest running private education institution for students in Kindergarten-10th grade.

 

The International Department of Landakotsskóli was added in 2015 to meet the educational needs of:

 

  • Iceland's expatriate academic, business and diplomatic community

  • families with temporary residence in Iceland

  • students returning from abroad who wish to continue their studies in English

  • Icelandic families seeking global perspectives in education

Our Staff

Our staff is comprised of creative, dynamic and dedicated teachers. All of our teachers have post-graduate teaching qualifications and a commitment to providing the very best in education.                         

             

Laurie Berg, Head of the international department; Homeroom teacher 6th-7th-grade

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Laurie has lived and taught in Iceland for many years. She has a bachelor's degree in social sciences and secondary education and a master's degree in special education. Laurie also obtained certification as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) and worked as an individual and family therapist in the state of Virginia before relocating back to Iceland in 2013.   

 

Estelle Toutain, Homeroom teacher K-1st-grade

A native of France, Estelle has a bachelor's degree in English and a post-graduate degree in teaching. She has extensive experience in teaching at all levels, from preschool-secondary education, in France, Iceland, and Scotland.

Jenny McKeown, Homeroom teacher 2nd-3rd grade; Secondary French 6th-10th

Originally from Bath, UK, Jenny studied modern languages at Oxford University before moving to Sheffield where she trained to teach. She taught in the UK for fifteen years before moving to Iceland in 2018. Jenny has enjoyed working with students of all ages at Landakotsskoli and is looking forward to her work with the second-third grade class this year.

Carly Zimenski, Homeroom teacher 4th-5th grade; Social-emotional learning coordinator K-5th

Carly Zieminski earned her bachelor's psychology with a minor in business administration from the University of Southern California. In addition, she holds a Masters of Arts in Urban Education with an emphasis in Digital Literacy from Loyola Marymount University. She started her career in education, 9 years ago, as a Teach For America corps member in Los Angeles.
Carly also serves as the coordinator of social-emotional learning to students in grades K-5, which she is extremely passionate about in our ever-changing 21st-century learning environment. She believes every child is an individual who deserves a safe, caring, and inspiring environment in which each will mature and develop: emotionally, physically, intellectually, and socially.
Carly moved to Iceland in July of 2018 with her Icelandic husband, and she enjoys spending time in the Icelandic nature and local pools!

Thomas Clogan, Homeroom teacher 8th grade; Secondary mathematics and science 8th-10th

Tom has both an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Pittsburgh. This is his tenth year teaching, and his second at Landakotsskoli. When he is not teaching he enjoys sports, cooking, hiking, and reading.

Gabriele Gudbjartsson, Homeroom teacher 9th grade; Secondary English and language arts 6th-10th

Gabriele is a native of Southern California. She has a bachelor's degree in communication and master degrees in public administration and education. Prior to moving to Iceland in 2006, she lived and taught middle school in Brooklyn, New York for several years.

Jennifer Thompson, Homeroom teacher 10th grade; English and language arts 9th-10th

A native of California, Jennifer has a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree in teaching secondary English, and is certified to teach English as a Second Language to secondary students (TESOL).  Jennifer has taught in three different countries and enjoys working with an international community.

Ellen Gunnarsdóttir, History and humanities 6th-10th grade

Ellen Gunnarsdóttir received her BA from Smith College and a PhD in history from Cambridge University. She has lived in Germany, Mexico, France, the USA, and the UK. She has taught at the University of Iceland, the University of Reykjavik and The Iceland Academy of the Arts. She has published scholarly work on Latin American history and is the co-author of Go Green, a children´s book on sustainability.

Louise Harris, Art and design teacher

A native of London, England, Louise has a bachelor's degree in art, design and technology, a master's degree in art education and a post-graduate certificate in English teaching. Prior to joining the International Department of Landakotsskóli, Louise worked at the Art's College, Myndalistaskolinn, as an art and secondary English teacher. She also taught in the International Baccalaureate program at Menntaskólinn við Hamrahlíð (MH).

Stephanie User, French; Technology support

Stephanie was born and raised in Nice, France, where she studied English and French as a Second Language, before moving to England. She spent six years in England where she completed her teaching qualifications and began her teaching career. Since moving to Iceland in summer 2014, Stephanie has been teaching a range of subjects to international students of all ages.

 

Sinead McCarron, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics Teacher K-10th grade

Sinéad has a master's degree in art design and education from Listahaskóli Íslands where she focused her research on creating interdisciplinary educational tools. She has mentored and taught interdisciplinary group projects with MA & BA design students at Listahaskoli Íslands and helped with creating the course structure in 2017. She also holds workshops and teaches design thinking and STEAM for the classroom.

Gundega Skela, Learning Support

Gundega is from Latvia. She joined the International Department of Landakotsskoli in 2017. Gundega has a bachelor's degree in media and journalism and is currently working on her master's degree at the University of Iceland. Gundega has been participating and organizing non-formal education projects and workshops around Europe for many years. Before moving to Iceland, Gundega worked in an art school as a project manager and teacher in Latvia. While also interested in cinema, her focus in education is critical thinking and non-formal education methods.
